LACTIC DEHYDROGENASE (LDH) FLUID BC131
💧 Pleural & Ascitic Fluid AnalysisThis test is performed on Body Fluids (like Pleural Fluid from lungs or Ascitic Fluid from stomach). These samples must be collected by a doctor in a hospital/clinic setting (Thoracentesis/Paracentesis). Home collection by a lab technician is not possible.
📋 Test Details
- Report Time: Same Day.
- Sample Type: Body Fluid (Pleural, Peritoneal, Pericardial, Synovial).
- Method: Enzymatic / Colorimetric.
- Test Code: BC131
What is LDH Fluid Test?
When excess fluid builds up in body cavities (like water in the lungs or swelling in the abdomen), doctors need to know why. Measuring the LDH enzyme level in that fluid is the key to solving the mystery.
This test helps categorize the fluid into two types: Transudate (Watery) or Exudate (Pus/Protein-rich).
Why is this Test Prescribed?
It uses Light's Criteria to determine the cause of fluid buildup:
If LDH is high, it means there is active inflammation, infection, or cell damage. Common causes include:
• Infections: Pneumonia, Tuberculosis (TB).
• Cancer: Lung cancer, Metastasis.
• Trauma/Pancreatitis.
If LDH is low, the fluid buildup is usually due to pressure imbalances rather than infection. Common causes include:
• Heart Failure (CHF).
• Liver Cirrhosis.
• Kidney Failure.
Common Fluid Types Tested
- Pleural Fluid: From the space around the lungs.
- Peritoneal (Ascitic) Fluid: From the abdomen.
- Pericardial Fluid: From the space around the heart.
- Synovial Fluid: From joints (to diagnose Septic Arthritis vs Gout).
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The Blood (Serum) LDH test checks general body health. The Fluid LDH test is specific to the liquid drained from a body cavity to diagnose the local cause of swelling.
No. Fluid extraction (tapping) is a sterile medical procedure. You must visit a doctor to have the fluid drained, then send the sample to us.
It is a medical rule. If the Fluid LDH is more than 0.6 times the Blood LDH, the fluid is classified as an Exudate (Infection/Cancer).
Disclaimer: This test requires a paired Blood LDH test for accurate ratio calculation. Consult your doctor.
