URINE GLUCOSE (POST-PRANDIAL / PP)
(Flat ₹11 OFF - Sanovra Lab)
Report Time: Same Day | Sample: Urine (2 Hours after food) | Test Code: BC219
The Glucose Post Urine Test measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in your urine typically 2 hours after a meal. In a healthy person, the kidneys filter the blood and reabsorb all the glucose, meaning there should be virtually no sugar in the urine.
However, if blood sugar levels spike too high after eating (usually above 180 mg/dL), the kidneys cannot hold it all back, and sugar spills into the urine. This condition is called Glucosuria.
The Science: Renal Threshold
To understand this test, you must understand the Renal Threshold for Glucose. Think of your kidneys as a dam.
-
✔Normal Blood Sugar (< 140 mg/dL): The dam holds everything back. No sugar in urine.
-
✔The Overflow Point (~180 mg/dL): This is the Renal Threshold. Once blood sugar crosses this limit, the dam overflows, and sugar spills into the urine.
Why Choose Urine Over Blood?
While blood tests (like HbA1c or PPBS) are more accurate, the Urine Glucose test is still useful because:
-
➤Non-Invasive: Useful for children or people afraid of needles.
-
➤Low Cost: An affordable screening tool for mass populations.
-
➤Kidney Check: It helps diagnose Renal Glucosuria a rare condition where the kidneys leak sugar even when blood sugar is normal.
Interpreting Your Results
The results are usually reported as Negative (Normal) or graded from 1+ to 4+ based on the color change of the chemical strip.
| Result | Approx Glucose Level | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Negative | 0 mg/dL | Normal. Blood sugar likely stayed below 180 mg/dL. |
| Trace | 100 mg/dL | Borderline. Blood sugar spiked slightly. |
| 1+ to 2+ | 250 - 500 mg/dL | Significant Glucosuria. Indicates poorly controlled diabetes. |
| 3+ to 4+ | > 1000 mg/dL | Severe. Very high blood sugar. Risk of dehydration and ketoacidosis. |
How to Collect the Sample
-
1.Empty Bladder: Before eating your meal, empty your bladder (urinate) and discard it. This ensures the test reflects only the sugar processed after the meal.
-
2.Eat Meal: Have your normal lunch or dinner.
-
3.Wait 2 Hours: Do not eat anything else. You can drink water.
-
4.Collect: Exactly 2 hours after finishing the meal, collect a fresh urine sample in the sterile container provided.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes. This is called Renal Glucosuria. It happens when your kidneys have a lower Renal Threshold than normal. It is usually harmless (benign) but should be confirmed by a doctor.
Yes. Taking large doses of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) can interfere with the chemical strip and cause a False Negative result (hiding the sugar).
No. A blood test (Fasting or HbA1c) is required for a definitive diagnosis. Urine tests are for screening or monitoring only.
